SU President, Psych faculty attend PAP national convention

Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann, Silliman University (SU) president; Dr. Michele Valbuena, Psychology Department faculty member; and Dr. Margaret Alvarez, Graduate School dean, attended the 56th Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) Annual Convention last Sept. 18-20 at the SMX Convention Center, Davao City.

McCann attended as an ex-officio member of PAP and recipient of PAP’s Outstanding Psychologist Award in 2002. She talked about her career as a social psychologist during the “Conversations with the PAP Outstanding Psychologists and Professional Regulation Commission Outstanding Professional” session of the convention.

Meanwhile, Valbuena presented her paper and moderated one of the symposiums.

Alvarez, as the immediate former president of PAP, led the convention’s Scientific Program Committee and PAP Nominations and Election Committee as chair.

Moreover, two graduates of the SU PhD in Psychology program were elected to the PAP Board of Directors: Dr. Lolina Bajin, who graduated in 2016; and Dr. Emmanuel Hernani, who graduated in 2015. Both were Clinical Psychology majors.

Dr. Ronald Yrog-Irog, Dr. Najie Responte, Dr. Devonni Hingone, Dr.Thea Boborol and Dr. Elita Cui, alumni of SU’s PhD in Psychology program, also attended the convention to present their papers.

With the theme “Inclusive Psychology: Valuing Diversity and Accommodation among Filipinos,” the convention gathered around 1,700 professionals from all over the country as the annual membership meeting of psychology practitioners, teachers, and researchers. The convention included plenary talks, parallel paper presentations, symposiums, learning sessions, and workshops.

Ateneo de Davao University co-hosted the convention. The next PAP convention will be held in September 2020 at Legazpi City.

PAP is an organization founded in 1962 that aims to promote excellence in the teaching, research and practice of Psychology.
