SU receives plaque and recognition for renewable energy use
Silliman University (SU) received the Renewable Energy Plaque by First Gen, SU’s sole renewable energy provider, at the Treasurer’s Office, Leopoldo T. Ruiz Administration Hall, Silliman University on January 24, 2024.
First Gen’s Mel Angelie D. Bacal, Power Marketing Associate, handed the plaque and certificate to University representatives Ms. Fiametta Olegario, OIC Treasurer; Dr. Aileen P. Maypa of the Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS); and Engr. Edgar S. Ygnalaga Jr., SU Buildings and Grounds (BG) superintendent.
“This is very good for the university in terms of walking the talk in green energy,” Engr. Ygnalaga Jr. expressed in an interview after receiving the plaque. “It is also good in terms of our savings,” he added.
It can be recalled that in 2019, the University first transitioned to the RE provider, which sources its supply from the geothermal power leader, Energy Development Corp. (EDC). In 2023, SU signed a memorandum of agreement with Green Core, which is owned by First Gen, to extend the use of renewable energy on campus.
Dr. McCann had maintained that this serves as a testament of Silliman’s commitment in 2018 to “finalizing its environmental principles, policies, and guidelines which highlight the university’s commitment to a green and sustainable campus.”
Engr. Ygnalaga Jr. thinks that the greatest benefit of this partnership with First Gen lies “in terms of the environment because that is long-lasting.” He added, “The savings for the money is secondary.”
Silliman University is the only 100% RE-powered university in Negros Oriental and one of the few in the country. From December 26, 2022 to December 25, 2023 alone, according to First Gen reports, the University decreased carbon footprint by 2,704.72 tonnes.
Bacal thanked the University on behalf of First Gen for the privilege of having been consistently chosen as the institution’s supplier for 100% green and good power.
“We hope that we’ll have an even stronger partnership in the years to come, and we look forward to celebrating more milestones with you,” Bacal said.
“Our goal of a decarbonized and regenerative future is only possible if we work with more partners and stakeholders like you who have also taken steps to greening businesses and communities,” she added.
