SU sends financial help, offers debriefing to quake victims
Silliman University, in response to the pressing need amid the damage brought by the recent earthquakes that hit Southern Mindanao, spearheads the sending of financial help as well as psycho-social debriefing among the victims particularly those who are members of the alumni association in the area and the students currently enrolled in the university.
Dr. Betty Cernol McCann, SU president, said that the university will send financial help through the alumni chapter and the UCCP church in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato. At the same time, the university will offer Psychosocial Processing (debriefing) among the victims through the Psychology Department.
“The financial aid to the victims particularly to our students would help them continue their studies amid the crisis their families are now suffering. This financial assistance would be: 1) partial or full waiver or (2) partial or full deferment of tuition, fees, board and/or dorm,” McCann emphasized.
However, the category of assistance awarded to qualified students would depend on the period of eligibility and the criteria for assistance based on the policy on financial relief of the university.
The students may apply for the assistance and may be granted based on the evaluation and validation of their situation.
As this developed, Silliman University is also calling other alumni to help the victims in Southern Mindanao by sending their donations, preferably canned goods or cash, to the Alumni and External Office headed by Mr. Ruben N. Bokingo.

(2) write in the subject line “Continuing Calamity Response Program Donation”; and
(3) indicate in the e-mail
- the purpose of the deposit,
- full name of the donor, and
- mailing address and contact number of the donor.

For those in the United States, donations may also be made through the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. These are donations specifically for “Scholarships” for the students from the areas affected by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake and the super typhoon Yolanda.
Accountability to Donors
The Program will adopt mechanisms of ensuring best benefit to those most in need of assistance. This includes being able to assess applications for assistance, in order for any support to go towards the continuing education of the students involved.
Through the Office of the Vice President for Development, the University will issue official receipts to our donors. We shall also endeavor, as we always do, to provide regular updates on the utilization of funds under this Program. A similar report will be released to the public on the University website.
