SU sets up fishing-inspired, eco-friendly Christmas tree
Silliman University (SU) set up a Christmas tree with fishing-inspired, eco-friendly decorations as a reminder of the importance of sustainable fishing practices.
Dr. Betty Cernol McCann, SU president, led the ceremonial lighting of the tree, December 4, 2020 at the East Quadrangle.
“Let us be reminded that 70 percent of the source of protein here on earth come from the seas. As a university, we have our own environment advocacy knowing that many Filipinos enjoy the harvest from the sea,” said McCann.
For the past two years, SU has opted to set up plastic-free Christmas trees. This year’s tree is still made of biodegradable, reused, and reusable materials, underscoring Silliman’s commitment to the environment.
Alumni and External Affairs Office Director Ruben Bokingo said the concept for the tree decorations this year focuses on the University’s involvement in protecting the rights of fish and fisherfolk as an implementing partner of the USAID-BFAR Fish Right Program.
Bokingo said the SU Architecture Department also designed a photo booth that complemented the tree’s theme. The photo booth features a bangka (native boat) in the middle of a bamboo maze designed to look like waves.
In her closing message during the ceremony, McCann said: “Let us be reminded that all these resources come from the One who saved us and will save us from the pandemic. Let us find joy in our hearts and let us find peace and happiness for everyone.”
