SUCN advances Universal Health Care integration in Health Sciences curriculum
The Silliman University College of Nursing (SUCN) hosted a two-day landmark seminar-workshop that focused on integrating Universal Health Care (UHC) into the curriculum of various Health Sciences programs, on July 16-17, 2024, at Rooms 302 and 304 on the 3rd Floor of Mary Marquis Smith (MMS) Building.
The event, “Integrating Universal Healthcare (UHC) in the Health Sciences Curriculum: A Seminar-Workshop,” aimed to equip faculty members and administrators with the tools necessary to refine educational strategies that reflect current healthcare trends and policies.
Drawing a total of 55 participants from SU’s Health Sciences departments, including the College of Nursing, Medical School, Institute of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Institute of Rehabilitative Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences – Pharmacy Program, the College of Education – Nutrition and Dietetics Department, and the SU Medical Center Foundation, Inc., the seminar-workshop was a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Silliman University College of Nursing, the Dr. Luz Sobong-Porter Center of Leadership Excellence in Nursing, and the Department of Health.
Meanwhile, Colleges of Nursing from Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) and St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD) also attended the event.
Key resource persons from the Department of Health Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH CVCHD) Dr. Deab P. Eltanal and Dr. Nelner D. Omus, alongside Fretzie P. Mariño, RN, shared insights into the UHC Law, local health system integration, and the establishment of a primary care provider network. Discussions also focused on navigating patient referral systems and identifying pertinent concepts for integration into the health sciences curriculum.
Dr. Theresa A. Guino-o, SUCN dean, along with participants from other schools, received commemorative copies of the book “Universal Health Care in the Philippines: From Policy to Practice” from the DOH.
Following the seminar-workshop, participating institutions will embark on their respective tasks of integrating Universal Health Care principles into their syllabi, which will involve developing clear learning outcomes and innovative teaching-learning strategies that align with the objectives outlined during the seminar-workshop.
