Announcement: SUMS Enrollment and Opening of Online Classes for Academic Year 2020-2021
For incoming first year, second and third year medical students
First semester online classes will start on August 17, 2020, in consonance with Silliman University’s schedule for resumption of classes and with existing guidelines of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Legal Education Board (LEB).
For the continuing Fourth Year Medical Students
Medical Clerkship Rotations (Hospital Duty) will commence on August 1, 2020, together with the Post-Graduate Internship rotations in consonance with the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges (APMC)’s recent advisory.
Classes across all levels are synchronized to open in the month of August to give parents, students, faculty members, and school personnel additional time to prepare for the new school year, and for the University to strengthen class management and delivery, as well as, enhance the capacity of its technologies and infrastructure related to alternative online learning.

Applicants for Admission with NMAT Requirement
SUMS is currently accepting Applicants who have already taken the NMAT with a score of 60 and above. Once you have completely submitted all the requirements to the Secretariat, you will be notified for an interview (face-to-face or online) for final processing and acceptance into the medical school.
Applicants for Admission without NMAT Requirement
SUMS is currently accepting Applicants who were supposed to have taken the cancelled NMAT examination on April 26, 2020. However, in accordance with the recent APMC Advisory, Philippine medical schools are advised to hold the processing of applicants without NMAT requirement until we receive the official advice from CHED.
The legal basis for this CHED CMO is Sec. 5 (a) of RA #2382 as amended, otherwise known as the Medical Act of 1959, and serve as the basis of CHED Memorandum Order #18 s. 2016 which states: “for admission to medical schools the applicant must have taken the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) and obtain a score of xx.”
APMC is aware that due to the cancellation of the April 2020 NMAT examination, there are some applicants without the NMAT requirement. The APMC sent a communication to CHED requesting for official advice. Until then, SUMS is just accepting submissions of requirements from applicants but no interview and no processing of documents for final acceptance into the medical school.
Until physical on-campus classes are allowed by CHED, LEB, DepEd, and the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), delivery of education shall be through alternative learning methods in accordance with the guidelines issued by the aforementioned government agencies to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Academic scholarships, grants in aid and tuition discounts are available for qualified students. Flexible tuition payment schemes to assist parents in planning based on their preference and individual financial capability are likewise available.
