SUSG STRAW and OCESL host successful seminar on mental health and suicide prevention
In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Silliman University Student Government Student’s Rights and Welfare (SUSG STRAW) Committee, in collaboration with the Silliman University Office of Community Engagement and Service-Learning (OCESL), organized a mental health and suicide prevention seminar on October 12, 2024, at Silliman Hall.
With the theme “Start the Conversation,” the seminar brought together student leaders from six (6) DepEd High Schools in Dumaguete City: Dumaguete City National High School, Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science High School, Camanjac National High School, Junob National High School, Taclobo National High School, and Piapi High School. Members of different Silliman University (SU) organizations also attended.
The seminar featured two keynote speakers: Rochelle Marie Remollo, SU Guidance Counselor, and Jun Angelo Sunglao, a licensed psychologist. The first session by Remollo focused on mental health awareness and self-care strategies, while Sunglao discussed identifying warning signs and providing support.
To conclude the seminar, students decorated tear-away posters containing national and Dumaguete suicide hotline numbers. Afterward, decorated posters were given to each participating school to raise awareness and increase the visibility of these important resources.
The seminar aimed to provide students with concrete actions and takeaways, emphasizing the importance of promoting suicide prevention and mental health resources in their communities. (Urseevi Tubio, Jr.)
