Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra to Perform at Luce

The Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra (TBO), the only musical ensemble in the world that utilizes the bamboo exclusively for instrumentation, returns to Silliman University for a series of concerts dubbed “The Sound of Bamboo” at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.

TBO was founded in 2011 by music teachers and music major students in Taiwan. The group is strongly supported by the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, National I-Lan University (Taiwan) by providing the group with the bamboo instrument developed by Dr. WU Shih-Yin.  It is the first registered orchestra using bamboo music instruments in Taiwan.

The group was organized to continuously develop as well as popularize the bamboo music in Taiwan and in other parts of the globe. TBO gives much efforts in crafting bamboo instruments capable of producing sounds similar to Chinese or western music. It also aims to network with enthusiasts, institutions and organizations with deep appreciation of bamboo music.

Since its founding in 2011, TBO had more than 30 performances. In 2011 and 2012, TBO was invited to participate in the Tamparuli Bamboo Music Festival in Sabah, Malaysia. TBO was the official representative of Taiwan in Tunog-tugan: First International Gongs and Bamboo Music Festival held in Dipolog City, Philippines in February 2013.
