Water-Inspired Mixed Media Art by Fine Arts Dep’t Chair Up at NCCA Gallery
The bodies of water of Dumaguete City are the inspiration behind the upcoming exhibit of Fine Arts Department Chairperson Ms Erma Lacorte Capucion at the NCCA Gallery in Intramuros, Manila.
Themed Revisiting Akat, the exhibit from July 5 to 31 features a hundred 9×9 panels of mixed media art – ink drawings, dried flowers and prints.
Akat is a T’boli dialect which means to scatter what was once in order.
“I was fascinated with the single word that described an occurrence as an effect of a specific action. In creating these pieces, performing repetitive strokes like cutting, drawing similar images, putting together the same forms, and arranging them without being aware of the orientation, for me, is liberating,” Ms Capucion said.
This is her second Akat exhibit. Compared to her first, Revising Akat showcases a collage of artworks inspired by the large bodies of water of Dumaguete. Living in Dumaguete and being surrounded by large bodies of water – be it sea, river or a calm lake – Ms Capucion shared that the element of water naturally found its way into her more recent art series.
“This captures the current state of organic elements that I see in the environment. These elements are still present but are slowly transforming to what is generally perceived as progress,” she said.
Revisiting Akat goes on exhibit under a grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
