SU’s literary journal invites students to write through contests
Silliman University’s Sands and Coral, one of the country’s oldest literary journals, invites students to join its fiction and essay writing competitions for a chance to be published in the journal and win cash prizes.
Isabel Torres and Pia Villareal, co-editors of Sands and Coral, encouraged Sillimanians to join the competitions so their work can be part of the journal’s “Pandemonium Collection,” which sums the theme of the journal, “Hope, Transformation and Rebuilding after the Pandemic.”
“We opted to do these competitions to incentivize Sillimanians to be part of Sands and Coral. We hope to revive the literary journal to its former glory as a literary journal made by the Silliman collective for the Silliman collective,” said Villareal.
Torres said the journal’s current theme reflects how people emerge from the pandemic with strength and hope for better times.
“Our personal reckonings with those two long years of isolation fuelled the stories we are ready to tell,” said Torres. “Sillimanians play a great role in this literary issue because it is their stories that are prioritized on the pages of Sands and Coral.”
Aside from being published in the journal, the top three entries will be awarded a cash prize.
The Sands and Coral writing competitions started last October 6, 2022 and will end by October 24, 2022.
