Alumni Update February 20 – 26, 2023
Silliman University (SU) College of Law alumna, Atty. May S. Aguilar, launched her latest book, “Nullity and Annulment: A Non-Lawyer’s Guide to the Philippine Law on Marriage,” February 14, 2023 at the Villareal Hall, SU Campus, Dumaguete City.
Present at the book launch were SU College of Law Dean, Atty. Florin T. Hilbay; College of Law students; SU Administration; members of the SU Board of Trustees; alumni and guests.
Aguilar said the book discusses the interesting facts of marriage, including what makes a marriage valid; an insight into void and voidable marriages; how they are annulled; and what their effects are on the properties of the spouses and on the legitimacy of the children.
Although divorce is technically neither a nullity nor an annulment, this book also discusses the effects of a foreign divorce on Filipino marriage; something which is provided for under article 26, paragraph 2 of the Family Code. This is referred to in the book as “effective divorce.”
Aguilar expressed her gratitude to those who have bought a copy of the book.
Aguilar is an alumna of the SU College of Law from Batch 1993. She is also a current member of the SU Board of Trustees.
