Remembering Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman on his 112th Death Anniversary
The Silliman Alumni Association, Inc. Dumaguete Chapter commemorated the 112th death anniversary of Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman last May 4, 2022, with a 6:30 am memorial service and floral offering at his bust located at the historic Silliman Hall grounds.
The memorial service was led by the members of the Dumaguete Alumni Chapter. Also present were Silliman University (SU) President, Dr. Betty Dr. Cernol-McCann, Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee (2021) Jusie Lydia Siega-Sur, SU Alumni and External Affairs Director, Ruben N. Bokingo and officers of the Dumaguete Alumni Chapter, among others. The guest speaker during the event was Miss Aliyah Kristine Solon Du, Student Governor of the SU Elementary School.
Horace B. Silliman died on May 4, 1910 at 84, leaving an astounding legacy of selfless contributions to Cohoes, New York, as well as capital funding and scholarships for Hamilton College, Union College, and Mount Hermon Academy, building the Silliman Lodge in New Jersey (a home for girls, affiliated with the Christadora settlement house in New York City), and establishing SU in 1901 in Dumaguete City, Philippines.
It has been a tradition of the Silliman Alumni Dumaguete Chapter to honor the life of the man who founded SU. Dr. Silliman was buried at the Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands Albany County, New York.
AN APPEAL FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR MS. DOLORES B. FELICITAS
The SU Alumni and External Affairs office would like to appeal for financial help for Ms. Dolores “Dolly” B. Felicitas our staff at the SU Manila Liaison Office. She had a stroke on April 11, 2022 and underwent thrombectomy surgery that helped recover mobility in her legs. She is now home and currently undergoing therapy sessions to restore her arm movement and speech. Please send us an email at [email protected] if you would wish to extend help.
