SUHS 1973 Closes in on its Php 1 Million Goal
The Silliman University High School (SUHS) Class of 1973 is closing in on its pledge of 1 million pesos to endow the SUHS 1973 Scholarship Fund for the SU Junior High School. Substantial contributions and pledges were given by classmates during their “50-2” (50th minus 2 years) Reunion, Sept. 20-Oct. 3, 2021, in Orlando, Florida.
More than 800,000.00 pesos are already with Silliman University. According to its agreement with SU, 80% of the income will be used to help pay for the education of two junior high school students. The balance, 20%, will be plowed back to the endowment to help it grow.
“I am confident that we will be able to exceed the 1 million [peso-goal] before 2023 when we will celebrate our 50th reunion at Silliman,” said class president Adlai J. Amor (OSA 1994). “Our classmates in North America and the Philippines have been very generous, and I am very grateful to them.”
The SUHS 1973 Scholarship Fund was established in 2018 during the group’s 45th Reunion, with an initial pledge of 500,000.00 pesos. When the pledge was met in 2019, the class decided to increase it to 1 million pesos during Tipon 2019 in Arlington, Virginia.
Two junior high school students, Nic Orlando Gonzales and Angelhu Elmo Morta, are the two current beneficiaries.
SUHS 1973 also operates a mutual aid fund, called the Faith Fund, which is available to classmates and their families in case of disability, disease, and death. More than $10,000 has been disbursed since the Faith Fund was started in 2005.
The 50-2 SUHS 1973 reunion was attended by 34 people, including 19 classmates from the United States and Canada, and their families. Everyone was required to be vaccinated and almost all the activities were held in the class suite at the resort hotel, Rosen Shingle Creek.
During the 48th reunion, the class held a memorial service to celebrate the lives of 37 classmates and 17 teachers who passed since their graduation in 1973. This included Joji Dulalas, Jonathan Serion, and Peter Arada, who passed this year. The class is composed of 140 graduates and non-graduates.
The 50-2 SUHS 1973 reunion also debuted the class’s 50th reunion T-shirt, “Fifty & Fantastic.” It revolved around the theme, “Kaon, Tsismis, Hudyaka, Katulog.”
