Silliman University (SU) Business Economics students Argielyn Kate Vergaño, Yuan Ceagor Raquel, Brent Jacob Augusto, Emmanuel Labrador, and Ken Joseph Ong were declared champions of the inter-university case analysis competition during the National Economic Summit 2023 last September 9 at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, Quezon City.

The SU team bested 13 other teams from universities all over the country. Visayas State University won second place while UP Los Baños won third place.

The five students are in their junior year (Level III), taking up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Major in Business Economics) at the SU College of Business Administration (CBA).

Vergaño, one of the students, said the key to winning the case analysis competition was finding an opportunity in the complexity of the challenge.

“Competing with students from leading universities in the country is a stepping stone for us to gain momentum in believing in our capabilities and the people who support us,” she said.

Ong, on the other hand, said he learned the importance of communication in teamwork from the case competition.

“We were interactive in our ways. We approached the case before us in a way we could understand both economic theory and policy analysis. We learned that economics, politics, and personalities are often inseparable,” he added.

Ong also expressed gratitude to Dr. Wilma Milo Tejero-Libarios, CBA dean, and Asst. Prof. Rene Rafael B. Juntereal, CBA faculty member, for their guidance and support.

Tejero-Libarios said: “Our goal is to shape our business students into trailblazers in their respective fields as innovators, game changers, and ethical leaders in business. To achieve this, we must make students competitive and relevant in today’s world by exposing them to case study competitions, research paper conferences, and other such events that will sharpen their analytical thinking.”

With the theme “Navigating an Interconnected World: Exploring Global Economics Through Filipino Lens,” the annual summit also included lecture and breakout sessions.

Raquel said he gained a lot of insights from the summit.

“I learned a great deal about our country, our people, our systems, our politics, and the inequities that reside in them,” he said.
