Call for Applicants: Japan Summer Service Learning (JSSL) Program 2023
Silliman University (SU) Office of Community Engagement and Service-Learning (OCESL) is now accepting applications from SU undergraduate students for the Japan Summer Service-Learning of International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, Japan.
The JSSL Program will be held on July 4 to 26, 2023 at International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan. The program fee is free of charge. ICU will cover the accommodation. Participants are to cover round-trip airfare, overseas travel insurance fee, visa, transportation, meals, and other personal expenses.

The Japan Summer Service-Learning (JSSL) Program 2023 Application Guideline for SLAN partners
Program Description
In July 2023, the Service-Learning Center of International Christian University (ICU) cohosts the Japan Summer Service-Learning program with Middlebury College (Vermont, USA). This program will bring together students from ICU, Middlebury College, Silliman University (Dumaguete, the Philippines), Union Christian College (Kochi, India), and Lady Doak College (Madurai, India) in an immersive service-learning project with local community partners in Japan. The deliberately intercultural nature of this program will provide the opportunity to work, reflect, and learn as a team diverse in culture, language and education.
Program Aims
Through the three-week program, students are expected to:
- broaden understanding of Japanese culture in urban and rural settings
- learn through community engagement in local Japanese communities
- work on issues with students in multicultural backgrounds
Schedule of on-site program [Tentative]
July 4 – Arrive in Japan
Week 1: Orientation, Service activities in Tokyo
Week 2: Service activities in a rural area in Japan (Tenryu Village)
Week 3: Reflection and final presentation
July 26 – Depart from Japan
Maximum number of participants: ICU (6), Middlebury College (4), Union Christian College (2), Lady Doak College (2), Silliman University (2)
Eligibility
This program is open to undergraduate students from any discipline. During the program, the instruction and group reflection will be facilitated in English, but there are many opportunities to communicate with local Japanese people.
Applicants must meet all the following requirements:
✓ Passion for community engagement in Japan
✓ Ability to adjust to local life in Japan including rural area
✓ Ability to adapt to and work in a multicultural setting
✓ Previous volunteer or community engagement experience
✓ Fluency in oral and written English
(Preferred but not required: Basic Japanese language skills)
