Silliman University Statement: A Call to Vote in the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections
The right to suffrage is a hallmark of a nation’s democracy, ensuring people’s active participation in the governance of the land. In any election, the outcome serves as a resounding testament to the sovereign will of the people. By choosing the officials entrusted with public office, citizens ultimately shape the character of the democratic government they desire to establish.
After two postponements, the Philippines will resume the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections this Monday. In light of this pivotal event, we enjoin the Silliman University community to exercise their right and vote intelligently and responsibly, bearing in mind that every vote matters.
We cannot overemphasize the importance of this event, as it is the foundation of “grassroots governance.” The barangay officials that we elect will play an indispensable role in implementing policies and programs that directly affect the lives of the community members. They will be entrusted with the vital task of ensuring that their constituents’ needs are not only acknowledged but also diligently addressed, and that all voices of the community are heard.
Conversely, the SK elections provide an opportunity for the youth to contribute to nation-building. It will give a platform for the young generation to cultivate their leadership skills and be proactive in community development by crafting and implementing programs geared toward developing young citizens.
As October 30, 2023 approaches, let’s pray for clean and peaceful elections. They present us an opportunity to strengthen our communities by choosing competent, conscientious, and dedicated servants who will lead toward a vibrant democratic community we collectively envision.
