SU hosts students from South Korea for business leadership, cultural exchange program

Hannam University students who completed the Hannam-Silliman Global Business Program hosted by Silliman University (SU) pose with their certificates during the closing ceremony last July 25, 2023 at the Multi-Purpose Room.

Silliman University (SU) hosted 15 students from its partner university in South Korea, Hannam University, to study Business Leadership and Philippine History & Culture Appreciation under the College of Business Administration’s Hannam-Silliman Global Business Program.

The program began last July 3 with a welcome ceremony and closed last July 25, 2023.

Dr. Wilma Milo Tejero-Libarios, CBA dean, said the program is outcome-based and is composed of two courses: “Business Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Economy” and “Appreciation of Philippine History and Culture.”

Each student from Hannam University was assigned a “buddy” or partner student from SU.

“Activities in the classroom and outside of it were planned to be engaging, interactive, and transformative for both our Hannam and Silliman students. We hope that our students return to Korea not only enriched in global business knowledge and better English communication skills, but also with a great appreciation of our history and culture,” said Tejero-Libarios.

Professor Kwangyil Park, one of the Hannam University faculty members who accompanied the students, said: “We hope that the institutional partnership between SU and Hannam University through the Global Business Program will continue even after our retirement. We hope to be able to invite students and faculty to Korea so that they can also experience Korean culture.”

The program included lectures, team-building activities, case study analysis, group report presentations, visits to museums and historical sites of the province during weekends, playing Filipino traditional games, preparing traditional Filipino food, dancing traditional Philippine dances, and educational field exposures.

“Students are required to keep a journal of their daily activities, challenges they faced and how they overcame them, new insights and learnings they acquired, and most importantly, the fundamental principles they came to value in their own lives,” said Tejero-Libarios.

Ahn Sungmin, one of the participants, said: “It was not difficult to complete the program because I had good Filipino friends and kind professors. I realized that the mind and heart are the same even though the language and culture are different. The world is one.”

Meanwhile, Kim Soozy, also a participant in the program, said: “I learned that we can be creative in dealing with our business and make ethical choices at the same time.”

Tejero-Libarios said the program was started in 2016 and was done yearly. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program was put on hold from 2019 to 2022.

Classes were held at the MBA Presentation Room of the CBA and cultural-related activities were held at the Audio-Visual Theater 1.
