SU-IEMS offers help in marine survey of Dumaguete’s coastline
Silliman University Institute of Environment and Marine Sciences (SU-IEMS) offered to collaborate with the local government of Dumaguete City, either as an observer/participant to a marine survey conducted in the waterfront of the city.
Dr. Janet S. Estacion, SU-IEMS director, in her letter to Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo dated August 16n 2021, said that “as stakeholders concerned with knowledgeable of the marine ecosystem of Dumaguete City, we are accepting your kind invitation to observe the marine surveys that are being conducted by the Envi-Comm Corporation of Cebu City.”
However, Dr. Estacion would want to know if the surveys in the different ecosystems would be done simultaneously by multiple teams or separately over different days by the same team from Envi-Comm Corporation.
She explained that they can assign appropriate experts and prepare the necessary equipment needed for the observation thus they need the information.
In its invitation, the city government said “experienced divers and marine biologists of Envi-Comm Corporation (Cebu based), will be conducting a Marine Survey of the Dumaguete’s coastline to determine the extent of marine life, to include but not limited to corals, sea grass, mangroves, etc.” You are invited to observe and/ or participate in the activity.”
However, as of this writing, Dr,. Estacion is yet to receive a reply from the mayor’s office.
