SU produces 60 licensed teachers, 2 topnotchers

Theresa Marie Cena is top 3 in the 2023 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (Elementary Level).
Sheena Louise Nodado is Top 7 in 2023 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (Secondary Level).

Silliman University (SU) registered high performance ratings in the 2023 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers, producing 60 new licensed teachers and two topnotchers in the elementary and secondary levels.

Based on the data released by the Professional Regulation Commission, SU’s ratings are above the national passing rates. SU achieved a 91.67% rating against the national passing rate of 47.01% in the elementary level; and an 80.85% rating against the national passing rate of 56.26% in the secondary level.

Two examinees from SU are among those with the top ten scores in the licensure exam. With a 94% rating, Theresa Marie Enarle Cena has the third highest score among the examinees in the elementary level. Meanwhile, Sheena Louise Paltingca Nodado’s 93.40% rating put her among the examinees with the seventh highest score in the secondary level.

Topnotcher in the Elementary Level

Cena said that she initially didn’t know that she wanted to be a teacher. Her original plan was to be an accountant. However, when she entered the SU College of Education (COE), she was motivated to do her best.

“With my Special Needs Education course, I am driven to do more for the children who deserve to experience quality education and services,” Cena said.

Cena’s previous grades in Accountancy made her ineligible for Latin honors. Thus, Cena said she made it her goal to top the boards. On the day that the results were released, she purposely turned off her phone to manage her nerves. It was her father who broke the good news to her.

Cena credits a combination of strategies for her success: choosing the right review center, having the discipline to study, taking care of your physical and mental health, among others.

“But the most powerful of all is prayers. I thank God for sustaining me and for giving me wisdom,” Cena said.

She added that a good support system is also very important.

Cena graduated in May 2023.

Topnotcher in the Secondary Level

Nodado graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, magna cum laude, on June 12, 2022. She was supposed to take the examination in March 2023 together with her batchmates; however, she decided to put it on hold because she thought she needed to prepare more.

While her batchmates proceeded to take the exam as scheduled, she busied herself answering drills, reading lots of science books, watching video lectures, and doing self-review. She also decided to start graduate school and applied for a graduate teaching fellowship at the COE, which allowed her to work on a master’s degree in education.

Nodado said that topping the board had been her goal since graduation. “I was half-expecting it actually, but you’ll never know God’s plans,” she added.

On the day the results were scheduled to be released, Nodado went on her day doing her usual tasks at the COE. However, as the hours got closer to the big reveal, Nodado said it became too nerve-wracking that she diverted her attention, intentionally logging out of her Facebook account and working on her Learning Development Plan, which was a requirement in her graduate class.

“While I was looking for more resources on the Internet for my lesson plan, I received a message from my friend congratulating me. He then sent me a picture of the topnotchers’ list and found my name in the Top 7,” Nodado said.

Nodao said that her success is thanks to the strong support system she got from her family, friends, mentors, and COE. She added that her disciplined study routine, time management, and strong faith had helped her a great deal, too.

Congratulations to SU’s new licensed teachers, based on the list from the COE:
