Institute of Service-Learning hosts students from International Christian University, George Mason University

The Silliman University (SU) Institute of Service-Learning hosted 12 students from International Christian University (Tokyo, Japan) and six students from George Mason University (Virginia, USA) for their service-learning program in SU last June 28 to July 26 and July 11-19, respectively.

 
International Christian University (ICU) students Shohei Yoshida, Risa Igarashi, Itsuki Iwano and Karen Kameya, who were
assigned in Vicente I. Villa Memorial School in Apolong, Valencia, teach the pupils the Japanese folk dance “Soran-Bushi.”

The students from International Christian University (ICU) were accompanied by their service-learning coordinator, Mr. Kenji Ishihara. For their month-long service-learning program, the students visited La Casa Esperanza; Little Children of the Philippines Fund, Inc. (LCPFI); Scandinavian Village; Bata Ng Calabnugan; Dumaguete City Youth Home; Public Elementary Schools in Valencia (Bongbong Elementary School, Bong-ao Elementary School, and Vicente I. Villa Memorial School in Apolong); and Barangay Boloc-boloc, Dauin.

ICU students Masaya Nagata, Nia Sasaki, Itsuha Riku, and Tomo Nelson teach the students of Bong-ao Elementary School in Valencia how to sing the “Frog Song” with the help of their student “buddies” from Silliman University (SU).

 

The following ICU students completed the service-learning program in SU: Tomo Nelson; Tomoki Komuro; Masaya Nagata; Shohei Yoshida; Yutaro Nakai; Saki Akimoto; Moe Toyoda; Risa Igarashi; Karen Kameya; Itsuki Iwano; Nia Sasaki; and Itsuha Riku.

Meanwhile, students from George Mason University (GMU) were accompanied by Dr. Al Fuertes, GMU’s Global Education Program director and one of this year’s Outstanding Sillimanian Award recipients. For their week-long service-learning program, the students visited LCPFI, La Casa Esperanza and Scandinavian Village.

The following GMU students completed the service-learning program in SU: Sophia Lutz; Lionardo Guevara; Veronica Llamas; Hee Yeon Sim; Onthusitse Stella O’Meara; and Diamond Jordan.
