About SLAN

The purpose of Service-Learning Asia Network (SLAN) is to promote the common interests and networks of student exchanges, faculty research, curriculum development and program evaluation among colleges and universities interested in Service-Learning in Asia. SLAN members share ideas about the development of Service-Learning in the region and have united together to encourage cross-national collaborations.

SLAN was initiated with the assistance of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. It began under the leadership of International Christian University (Japan), who had the insight and motivation to build up a network of Service-Learning providers in Asia and begin to gain recognition for the pedagogy’s work in the region.

After a brief hiatus, the network was reignited at the 3rd Asia Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning where SLAN members in attendance gathered together to discuss the future and importance of our organization. As of April 2020, Silliman University Office of Community Engagement and Service-Learning took over the Secretariat duties of the network.

Mission Statement

The United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia works to support a Christian presence in colleges and universities in Asia

Vision Statement

The work of the United Board (UB) centers on the Christian faith, higher education, and Asia. The work has long promoted whole person education in the liberal arts tradition, with a background of Christian values.

In Asian countries with Christian colleges and universities, the UB cooperate with those institutions to strengthen their Christian identity. In countries where Christian colleges and universities do not presently exist, the UB emphasizes projects and programs that reflect the commitment to Christian service.

The UB emphasizes supporting professional training for faculty, administrators, and trustees, as well as linking and networking among Asian institutions of higher education.

Operating as both a grant-making and programmatic organization, UB focuses on broad, comprehensive programs to respond to the challenges and diversity of Asia. The UB work cooperatively with other organizations that share our goals, such as academic institutions and foundations and fund programs by seeking contributions from individuals, churches, foundations, and alumni of Asian institutions to supplement the income from the endowment.

The 8th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on ServiceLearning Online Conference

Date: 28-29 July 2021
Hosted by: Silliman University

About the Conference

We are now in our most difficult times because of the succession of calamities and disasters, either natural or human-induced, that makes the lives of the severely affected regions in Asia-Pacific more challenging. This requires cooperation among social institutions to survive as one community in a limiting environment. This also demands the preparation of the younger generation, particularly higher education students, to be affectively and effectively involved in the efforts to make better the lives of those in need.

One way to prepare students, both in theoretical and practical ways, is through the integration of service-learning pedagogy in formal classroom instruction, research undertakings, and community engagement – functions mandated of higher education institutions. Exposing students in all these domains of learning with service-learning pedagogy, as the guiding framework of the design of learning activities that benefit participating communities, may produce students who understand and appreciate the value of their chosen career tracks before and beyond completion of their degrees.

The 8th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning is anchored on the theme “Community Engagement at the Intersection of Research and Extension” with the following sub-themes:

  1. Service-Learning and Classroom Instruction
