SU faculty member bags best paper award in int’l confab

LJ Zaphan Lamboloto, a faculty member of the Silliman University (SU) Philosophy Department, bagged the best paper award during the 45th Philosophical Association of Visayas Mindanao (PHAVISMINDA) International Conference held on November 27-29, 2023 in Cagayan de Oro City.
In his paper, “Hegemony and American Imperialism in the Philippines” which he presented online, Lamboloto argued that the failure of the Philippine government to fortify the nation’s political system and economic independence can be traced to its pro-American policies such as the Bell Trade Act of 1946 and the Laurel-Langley Agreement.
Using a retroactive analysis of Alejandro Lichauco’s “The Lichauco Paper: Imperialism in the Philippines” and the lenses of Antonio Gramsci’s “Prison Notebook,” Lamboloto reconstructed a critique of American Imperialism in the Philippines to synthesize how American imperialism did not only oppress and hegemonize the Philippine market economy but also the Filipino consciousness.
This year, PHAVISMINDA offered a hybrid international conference in collaboration with the Social Sciences and Humanism Department of Xavier University.
Established in 1979, PHAVISMINDA is an independent academic association that aims to provide academicians and researchers a platform for academic discourses.
